Janet was raised in Fairfax County, Virginia on a small farm. She grew up riding horses and spending lots of time playing outside. She graduated from American University with a degree in Political Science and received her Master’s degree in Urban Planning from Va Tech. Janet began her career with the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington DC doing policy analysis of proposed environmental regulations. She and her husband, Bud LaRoche, moved to Roanoke in 1988 and Janet began a 22 year career in land use and greenway planning with Roanoke County. She retired in 2011. Janet served on town council in the Town of Vinton from 2015-2020. She is very involved with the Roanoke Valley Greenway Commission and the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation. She and her husband have an adult son and enjoy traveling, hiking and spending time at the beach.
